The first edition of Videobrasil was held in 1983, bringing together a trailblazing generation of national artists and documentary and video makers. In the years that ensued, the competitive exhibition turned to mapping electronic art from the geopolitical South of the globe, and accompanied the fast-paced evolution of electronic media as they became part of contemporary production. From 1992 onwards, SESC_Videobrasil Festival became consolidated as an international reference for southern art and a privileged vantage point for observing contemporary production. Associação Cultural Videobrasil was created in 1991 to expand the event’s objectives with lasting actions, such as publications and documentaries. In the 2000-2009 decade the International Electronic Art Festival SESC_Videobrasil established its curatorial character. Beginning with the 13th edition, the programme was divided into thematic sections derived from observation of contemporary issues and trends, such as Performance (2005) and Moving Image and Lots of Strangeness (2007). Starting in 2007, strategic partnerships with teaching and research institutions based in Brazil and in foreign countries allowed Videobrasil to grant residency prizes to artists selected for the Southern Panorama competitive exhibition. The 17th International Contemporary Art Festival SESC_Videobrasil will be held from 30 September until 11 December 2011. As suggested by its new name, a deep, intense model shift marks this edition when compared to previous ones. Aligned with the nature of contemporary artistic practices, the new competitive exhibition expands its ability to soak in diverse manifestations, such as video, installations, performances, book-objects, and other artistic experiments.
