The documentary film aims to open a window into a subculture in Vietnam, exploring how effeminate and gay men in this highly conformist country find acceptance in the popular Mother Goddess Religion (Dao Mau). More broadly, I’m interested in exploring the conflict between conformity and individuality, and how people devise strategies for living in a society that requires conformity while still being able to express their individual identities.
