Seasons of Migration. 2005

Documentary video by John Bishop. Choreography: Sophiline Cheam Shapiro. Producers: John Shapiro & John Bishop

Following the 1979 collapse of the Khmer Rouge "Killing Fields," hundreds of thousands of Cambodians fled their native land. Around 150,000 resettled in the USA, with about one-in-three making a new home in Long Beach, California, thereby giving the city the largest concentration of Cambodians of any city outside of Southeast Asia. Despite the fact that these refugees arrived completely devastated by war, poverty and terror, their community, as the capital of the diaspora, now exerts powerful cultural influence on the Motherland.
