Malay Woodcarving in a Contemporary Context |
|
Gunungan of Pulpit The ornate headboard of the Mimbar (pulpit) is in the shape of a "gunungan" (cosmic mountain) carved in Langkasukan style, with the characteristic uptilted ends of the tendrils. The lower edge features a fine scroll of Islamic calligraphy containing a verse from the Koran. © Photo: Spirit of Wood - The Art of Malay Woodcarving, by Farish Noor & Eddin Khoo, photos: David Lok |
