Women by Women Every year in Frankfurt, at the world’s largest book fair, one country or region is invited as an honorary guest. In 2004 this honor was given to the Arabic world, whose presentation at the fair was handled by the Arabic league. As usual, a supportive program took place in the City of Frankfurt’s cultural institutions, which included a selection of exhibitions by visual artists. Current art activities, however, were barely represented on this occasion. The most interesting presentation was made possible through the institutions Fotografie Forum International and the Kommunale Galerie der Stadt Frankfurt, supported by the Arabic Organization for Education, Culture and Sciences (ALECSO). "Women by Women" combined circa 80 works by 8 women photographers from the Arabic world. Michket Krifa, who lives in Paris and was born in Tunisia, conceived the idea of this "gaze directed at women by women" in collaboration with Celina Lunsford from Frankfurt’s Fotografie Forum international. What the curator finds especially interesting about the individual women photographers is expressed in her short texts, which we have published here on the respective illustrated pages - see the tour. We thank the Fotografie Forum International for making the reproductions of these works available to us.
