Indicated by Signs
Indicated by Signs is an international project of curators from Egypt, Germany, Lebanon and Morocco. It presents an artistic approach to the notion of cultural, political and social forms of "appearance". For the first time in the course of the project, the Bonner Kunstverein combines all participating artists who have previously exhibited in Beirut, Cairo and Fez/Rabat. The underlying connection between the artworks is their common point of departure: the artistic depiction of individual forms of appearances. Investigating how the categories of class, ethnicity, sexuality and cultural background influence the appearance of individuals, the exhibition also reflects upon how such categories are negotiated within different cultural contexts.
Indicated by Signs is based on a variety of different curatorial approaches, which are intertwined by a dynamic dialogue between the curators and the cultural contexts they work from. Next to its exhibition series, Indicated by Signs is accompanied by artist talks, workshops and a publication. The project was initiated and supported by the Goethe Institutes of Egypt, Morocco and Lebanon. Participating artists in Bonn:
