Photoquai 2009
2nd Biennial of Non-Western Photography

Photoquai 2009

Photoquai 2009 is the second festival of Musée du Quai Branly, located on the banks of the Seine and at renowned partner institutions in Paris. Being devoted to non-Western photography, this year’s festival is dedicated to 165 years of Iranian photography. Artistic director is Anahita Ghabaian Etehadieh, Iranian gallerist and founder of the Silk Road Gallery in Teheran.

Photoquai displays a variety of artworks of 50 contemporary photographers from around the world whose works were previously unexhibited or little known in Europe. The photographers come from the major geographical areas, which are represented in the museum’s collections: the Americas, Asia, Africa, Oceania.

165 years of Iranian photography is curated by Bahman Jalali and Hasan Sarbakhshian. It gives an overview of Iranian photography from the end of the 19th century, with the portraits from the Qajar era and the photo studios, which appeared in Iran at the time of Reza Shah Pahlavi, up until the most contemporary works by major Iranian photographers. The images are often symbolic, poetic and reflect upon the identities of Iranian people, their history and their way of apprehending the world.
