Crosswords

Crosswords consists of images of the signage on the glass fronts of shops in the old districts of Sharjah. The signs, most often in some combination of Arabic, English and Hindi, are legible to as wide a cross-section of the residents of Sharjah as possible, advertising the myriad services offered within the unassuming establishments: tailor shops, barbers, dry cleaners, clothing stores.

The images which form a rich display of the influences of different cultures on the everyday public spaces of Sharjah, are assembled in grid form. Harmonious in spite of their differences, they are a metaphor for the diversity within a community.
