TANKLOVE. 2004
Digital video, 07:00 min Commisioned by U-TURN Quadriennale, Copenhagen The artist had a tank roll without warning through the streets of a small Danish city. He wanted to provide a taste of what happened in 1997 in the Turkish city of Sincan, near Ankara. In the early morning of February 4, 1997, the military sent tanks and troops through Sincan, supposedly on the way to a maneuver.
Köken Ergun about his work: The reason I chose Denmark was to ask the question, 'What if it happens to them one day?' This is the welfare state that is so proud of its democracy. Military or other totalitarian fractions are hardly visible, and powerless. I wanted to ask if one day this could change. And further than this, to pose the simple question, 'What do you do when you see a tank?' (From: Interview with Köken Ergun by Petra Heck, May 2009. Quoted from the booklet of the exhibition in Tanas.
