3rd Bangkok Art Biennale

CHAOS : CALM

With the third edition’s theme of CHAOS : CALM, the Bangkok Art Biennale reflects challenges confronted by humankind during these precarious times. Artists whose works reflect turbulence, trauma and angst remind us of the fragility and weakness of human species. At the same time, in our disruptive and seemingly dystopian world, artists offer glimpses of hope, perseverance and determination to recover and thrive. In this chaos, art can surprise us as a path to overcome deep tensions by creating contexts that encourage calm, reflection, and tranquility. CHAOS : CALM will engage with sub themes that impact the human condition, such as geopolitical rivalry, ideological clashes, neocolonialism, migration, and diaspora. This edition will also contemplate the climate crisis, as artists process the ecological collapse and destruction of Mother Earth while urgent warning signs around us continue to be dismissed and ignored.

"The Bangkok Art Biennale encourages new ways of seeing and interacting with art through the lens of CHAOS : CALM, with impactful presentations by our selected artists in multiple venues across the city. As we move from strength to strength with our trilogy of artist announcements, this final list is a confident representation of international names and leading Thai voices that are united by artistic perspectives that shine a ray of light beyond the fray of our present time," comments Prof. Dr. Apinan Poshyananda, Chief Executive and Artistic Director of the Bangkok Art Biennale.

Venues

Since its inaugural edition, the Bangkok Art Biennale has continued to push boundaries and make art accessible to the public at sites across the capital city. At BAB 2022, visitors will be able to enjoy the exhibition throughout the urban area at venues including: Bangkok Art and Culture Centre (BACC), Queen Sirikit National Convention Center (QSNCC), as well as experience contemporary art in traditional heritage sites including Wat Phra Chetuphon Wimon Mangkhalaram Rajwaramahawihan (Temple of the Reclining Buddha or Wat Pho), Wat Arun Ratchawararam Ratchawaramahawihan (Temple of Dawn or Wat Arun), Wat Prayurawongsawat Worawihan (Temple of Iron Fences or Wat Prayoon), and Museum Siam: Discovery Museum, a museum dedicated to the history and culture of the Thai people. BAB will also take place at Central World as an additional venue that has been added along the City Route. Situated in the heart of Bangkok, Central World is a large retail multiplex with world-class entertainment and services. The list of venues is completed by: BAB Cafe, The PARQ, JWD Art Space, Samyan Mitrtown, and The Prelude, One Bangkok.

The 2022 edition will also launch the BAB Virtual Venue as a new venue edition, which will showcase a number of innovative artworks specifically created for the digital realm. In the post-pandemic world, technology has been a critically important tool to support accessibility in contemporary art and the creative industries, while also offering artists new mediums to create and share their work. Moreover, BAB 2022 will continue presenting its rich digital programme of talks, symposiums, live performances and virtual walkthroughs to allow the international community to engage with the Biennale online.
